Midwife vs Doula | Gold Coast Newborn Photographer | Understanding the Difference & Why Both Matter

When preparing for the arrival of your baby, you’ll likely hear the terms midwife and doula and while they both play incredibly important roles, they serve very different purposes. Understanding the difference between the two can help you build the right support system for your birth and postpartum journey. As a trusted Gold Coast newborn photographer, we often work with families in those early weeks and see firsthand how powerful the right support can be.

What is a Midwife?

A midwife is a medically trained professional who is responsible for the clinical care of both mother and baby during pregnancy, labour, and after birth. They monitor your health, provide medical advice, assist with delivery, and ensure everything is progressing safely.

Midwives can:

  • Monitor baby’s heart rate and development
  • Provide medical care and guidance
  • Assist during labour and delivery
  • Support you immediately postpartum

They are an essential part of your birth team and are focused on the medical and physical wellbeing of both mum and baby.

What is a Doula?

A doula, on the other hand, provides non medical, emotional and practical support. Their role is to nurture, guide, and hold space for you throughout your journey especially during labour and the postpartum period.

A doula may:

  • Offer emotional reassurance and encouragement
  • Support your birth preferences and advocate for you
  • Help with feeding and settling baby
  • Cook meals, tidy the home, and care for your environment
  • Provide continuous support before, during, and after birth

Unlike a midwife, a doula is there purely for you, your emotions, your experience, and your transition into motherhood.

Why Having Both is So Powerful

The most supported mothers are often those who have both a midwife and a doula. While your midwife ensures everything is safe and medically sound, your doula ensures you feel seen, heard, and supported emotionally.

This combination allows you to:

  • Feel confident and informed
  • Reduce stress and anxiety
  • Have continuous support throughout your journey
  • Experience a more positive and grounded birth and postpartum

How This Impacts Your Newborn Experience

As a Gold Coast newborn photographer, we see how this support carries into the newborn stage. Families who feel supported often arrive at their sessions more relaxed, present, and connected. There’s a softness in the way they hold their baby, a sense of calm that comes from feeling cared for.

Your newborn session is not just about photos, it’s about capturing a moment in time when your world has just changed. Having the right support system in place allows you to truly be in that moment.

Creating Your Village

Motherhood was never meant to be done alone. Whether it’s a midwife, a doula, or both, building your support network is one of the most important things you can do for yourself and your family.

As your Gold Coast newborn photographer, we are here not only to capture your memories but to support you in creating a calm, empowered, and beautiful transition into motherhood.

Hues of pinks and creams

To create an inviting atmosphere, we chose a colour palette that embraced the gentle tones of pink and cream. These soft colors not only complemented baby girls delicate features. Welcome Baby Esther: A Newborn Photoshoot with Earthy Rainbow and Minimalistic Vibes

Welcoming a new baby into the world is a momentous occasion, and capturing those early days is something truly special. We had the joy of photographing baby Esther in a serene newborn photoshoot that beautifully combined earthy rainbow and minimalistic themes.

Embracing Earthy Tones

For Esther’s photoshoot, we wanted to create an environment that felt warm, inviting, and grounded. Earthy tones—think soft browns, and gentle terracotta—set the stage for a calming atmosphere. These colours not only complement Esther’s natural beauty but also evoke a sense of peace and tranquility, reflecting the warmth of her new family life.

The Magic of Minimalism

Minimalism was at the heart of this shoot. By keeping props and backgrounds simple, we allowed Esther to take center stage. The clean lines and uncluttered spaces let her delicate features shine through, creating timeless images that focus on the pure essence of her newborn spirit. Each shot highlights her tiny fingers, serene expressions, and those precious little details that make newborns so enchanting.

A Touch of Rainbow

To infuse some playful energy into the session, we incorporated subtle elements of an earthy rainbow. Soft fabrics and textured blankets in muted pastel shades added just the right touch of color without overwhelming the serene aesthetic. This delicate rainbow motif served to symbolise hope, joy, and the beautiful journey of parenthood that lies ahead.

Capturing Precious Moments

As we photographed Esther, we focused on capturing those fleeting moments that make newborns so special—the way she curled up in her sleep, the little sighs, and those adorable yawns. Each click of the camera captured her sweet personality, creating a visual narrative of her first days in the world. The combination of earthy tones and minimalism allowed her to shine in each photograph, resulting in a collection of images that feel both intimate and timeless.

A Keepsake for a Lifetime

These newborn photos are more than just pictures; they are cherished keepsakes that will remind Esther’s family of the joy and love that surrounded her arrival. As she grows, these images will tell the story of her beginnings—full of warmth, colour, and serenity.

A Beautiful Beginning

Capturing baby Esther’s newborn photoshoot was an honor. The earthy rainbow and minimalistic themes came together to create a stunning visual celebration of new life. We are thrilled to have had the opportunity to document this beautiful moment in her family’s journey.

Welcome to the world, baby Esther! May your life be filled with love, laughter, and all the colours of the rainbow.

Gold Coast QLD Newborn Photography | Sonny’s Cake Smash

There is nothing more enjoyable than watching a one year old smash a cake! It was Sonny’s birthday, so we had to organise a cake smash for him. The giggles and laughter that came from Sonny was contagious. His sweet smile and explorative nature of the cake allowed us to capture the most precious images.

The Planning

When Chanel (Sonny’s mama) got in contact with me, we immediately started the planning process for Sonny’s shoot. I knew that a creamy, neutral boho inspired shoot would be perfect for the little man. I sent Chanel through our clothing inspiration guide to give a visual idea of what look we were going for. We stock quite a few different outfits for our little ones in the studio, from newborn to toddler. It’s always so amazing when clients allow the photographer to take creative control. Now time for planning the cake! Naked cakes are always a favourite of mine, I really feel that they meet those rustic, boho vibes. We organised for the cake to be topped with donuts, dried flowers and edible gold leaf. Next adding in some pampas grass and a beaded garland to complete the set up.

The Session

Sonny did so well during his session! He was so playful and giggly. We started the session off with portraits in the little basket. Sonny loved the music we had playing in the background and kept clapping to it. He was so excited so we decided to add the cake in for him to play with. He loved the cake and kept wanting his mama and dada to hand feed it to him. Finally we ended the cakesmash session with a splash bath. Babies either love or hate the splash bath. Sonny had so much fun, in fact I think it was his favourite part about the entire session. He was sticking his tongue out, laughing and splashing.
